ART & FLAVORS OF TUSCANY & UMBRIA

(10 days, 9 nights: 4 nights in Tuscany, 3 nights in Umbria, 2 nights in Rome)

Day 1

Arrival to Florence

Arrival to Florence A. Vespucci Airport and transfer by private bus to the hotel. Dinner and accommodation at your hotel.

 

Day 2

Montalcino, the Brunello and Sant’Antimo

Breakfast at the hotel and departure to Montalcino, exemplary of the architecture of late Middle Ages.

This visit will enable you to discover how the famous Brunello wine is created and in doing so, you will visit two of the most prestigious wine cellars and be guided by the estate’s wine-makers.

Lunch on your own in Montalcino. In the afternoon visit to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, which was founded, according to tradition, by Charles the Great in the year 781.

Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

 

Day 3

Montepulciano, the Vino Nobile and Pienza

Breakfast at the hotel and departure to Montepulciano.

Montepulciano, the so called “pearl of the Renaissance”, is also an important agricultural center. It lies on a hilltop in a panoramic position and it is surrounded by 15th century defensive walls. Montepulciano is the birthplace of a great red wine is produced: the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

Visit of the town followed by the visit to one of the most ancient cellar in Italy located right in the heart of the Montepulciano.

Time at leisure for lunch and shopping.

In the afternoon visit to Pienza and to a producer of the famous Pecorino cheese.

Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

 

Day 4

The Chianti Classico region

This is without doubt one of the most beautiful areas in Tuscany. Visit to Monteriggioni, an enchanting medieval village completely surrounded by the XIII century walls, descried by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy.

Lunch at the hotel.

In the afternoon stop to an amazing castle which produced the D.O.C.G. Chianti Classico red wine. The owner will guide you through the beautiful cellar of the estate. The visit will be followed by a guided wine tasting. Then stop in the lovely Medieval hamlet of Greve in Chianti, which is considered to be the heart of the Chianti Classico. Time at leisure to discover the village.

Dinner on own or optional typical dinner with music entertainment on the Chianti Hills.

Overnight at your hotel.

 

Day 5

Cortona and Perugia

Breakfast at the hotel and check out. Leave Tuscany to Umbria.

Morning departure to Cortona. Upon arrival visit of the city all surrounded by walls with a perimeter of about 3 km. Founded by the Etruscans Cortona is considered one of the oldest and most scenic hill towns in Tuscany historical rival to Siena and Arezzo. Today it is a charming maze of old streets and medieval buidings.

After lunch on own continue to Perugia.

Perugia, the great "Guelf strong-hold" rises up in the region's heart, with its 5 historical quarters closed-in by its Etruscan town walls. These enormous bastions formed by cyclopic square masses, were constructed 22 centuries ago and are still visible for long stretches. When the city of Rome was little more that an encampment of huts, one could already enter the Etruscan Perugia using one of 7 portals, among which one was particularly mighty, the Porta Pulchra or of Augustus, dating back to Etruscan times.

Visit of the city with the Rocca Paolina, the Corso Vannucci, the Piazza IV Novembre with the famous fountain by Giovanni and Nicola Pisano, the Priori Palace and the Notai Palace.

Check in at your hotel to Umbria, dinner and overnight.

 

Day 6

Assisi & Spello

Breakfast at the hotel and departure by bus to Assisi.

Assisi, which was added to Unesco's World Heritage List in 2000, represents an ensemble of masterpieces of human creative genius, such as the Basilica of San Francesco, which have made it a fundamental reference for art history in Europe and in the world. The interchange of artistic and spiritual message of the Franciscan Order has significantly contributed to developments in art and architecture in the world.

Assisi represents a unique example of continuity of a city-sanctuary within its environmental setting from its Umbrian-Roman and medieval origins to the present, represented in the cultural landscape, the religious ensembles, systems of communication, and traditional land-use. Being the birthplace of the Franciscan Order, Assisi has from the Middle Ages been closely associated with the cult and diffusion of the Franciscan movement in the world, focusing on the universal message of peace and tolerance even to other religions or beliefs.

Guided tour of Assisi including St. Claire’s Basilica, the Temple of Minerva and St. Francis’ Basilica.

Time at leisure for individual visits and shopping.

Lunch at the hotel.

In the afternoon visit to Spello, a pretty town also known as “the pink city” as this is the colour which the town takes on at sun set and is due the stone that the houses are built with.

Dinner on own or optional Medieval Dinner in a Castle.

Overnight at your hotel in Umbria.

 

Day 7

Day at leisure

Breakfast and dinner at the hotel.

Day at leisure or optional full day excursion to Todi and Orvieto with lunch in a farmhouse.

Overnight at your hotel in Umbria.

 

Day 8

Ancient Rome

Breakfast at the hotel and check out. Leave Umbria to Rome.

Upon arrival visit to the Ancient Rome including the Roman Forum, the Imperial Forum, the Coliseum, etc. Lunch and dinner on own.

Optional Dolce Vita Evening : typical dinner and by night tour of Rome

Overnight at your hotel in Rome.

 

Day 9

Vatican State

Visit of the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel. Visit of St. Peter’s Basilica and square.

Lunch and dinner on own.

Optional Farewell Dinner with the Tenors.

Overnight at your hotel in Rome.

 

Day 10

Departure

Transfer by private bus to Rome Leonardo da Vinci International airport according to your departure flight. Departure to the States. Arrivederci Roma!!!!
